Tips for Preventing Cracking on Quartz Countertops

Last Updated: Jun 08, 2018

Quartz stone is a new type of stone which is made of 92% quartz sand powder as the main aggregate 8% resin pigment and other auxiliary materials as the main adhesive material. After mixing it is made by vacuum pressure vibration molding curing and polishing.

Quartz Advantages:
Because of its high density and strong hardness, quartz has excellent anti-scrape and anti-fouling properties, not being scratched, impermeable, stain-resistant, corrosion-resistant, high temperature resistant, green and environmentally friendly, and directly in contact with food.

Quartz Disadvantages:
But from a physical point of view, quartzite has slight thermal expansion and shrinkage, and some mechanical properties, such as shrinkage stress, impact toughness, elongation at break, etc. Cracking occurs when the material is unable to withstand the internal stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction and is subjected to severe external impact.

Following are some tips for preventing Quartz cracking:

1. In the design of plane splicing, the physical properties of quartz should be taken into account to avoid the consequences of joint cracking caused by thermal expansion, cold shrinkage or stress concentration. In selecting the connection position, the mechanical action of the plate must be fully considered. Avoid connecting at corner or mouth.

2. Stress concentration should be taken into account when designing the corner of the table surface, which causes the crack at the corner of the table surface. Therefore, the arc angle with radius above 25mm should be kept at all corners in machining.

3. When the hole position is designed, the opening position should be more than or equal to 80mm from the edge of the Mesa, to prevent the hole from cracking, and the corner angle of the hole should be kept above the radius 25mm.

4. When the Mesa is installed, the expansion gap of 2-4mm should be left between the countertop and the wall, so as to ensure that the countertop will not crack due to thermal expansion and cold contraction. The countertop shall be kept at a maximum distance of not more than 600 mm from the support frame or support plate to reduce the deformation or even fracture of the countertop.

5. In daily use, also avoid cracking caused by external factors, such as: do not hit the quartz Mesa by gravity, do not directly contact the surface of extremely hot pots or utensils, can be covered with a layer of heat insulation.
